Spring refresh design tips

It’s Spring! You’ve already done your cleaning and now you’re ready to give your home a little “Spring Refresh”. Want to change the look and feel of your home but don’t want to break the proverbial bank? Here are a few low cost/low intensive interior design tips for you!

  • Add a few potted plants to your kitchen or living areas. They serve as accessories and add some color to your home. On the health side, they help to absorb pollutants from the atmosphere and put more oxygen in the air. Don’t have the best luck keeping plants alive? Go to your local supply store or nursery and they can help you select the right plants for you.
  • Want your room to look brighter? Make sure your ceiling is painted in a lighter tone than your walls! Even if you only have a few windows, this trick helps to brighten up any room.
  • If you have some small rooms and want them to look larger, that’s an easy fix. Paint them in softer or lighter colors. Remember, dark colors tend to give the illusion of a cramped space and can make areas look smaller. Open the room to more natural lighting, and it looks even more substantial.
  • If you have limited natural lighting in a room because of unavailable windows or blockages, add a few decorative mirrors around the room! If you place some of those mirrors across from the available windows, they can add to the illusion of more lighting in that area.
  • Remove excess furniture in a smaller room to make it look roomier than before. Let's face it…you probably don't need all those chairs! Better to do fewer high-quality furniture. The harder it is to maneuver around a room, the more crowded it is and feels!
  • Hang your artwork and paintings at the right height. Do you know that the average human eye level is 57 inches from the floor? Well, curators of galleries and museums do! They hang their artwork so that the center of each piece is about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Give it a try yourself!
  • If you update your window treatments, always go with the right lengths. Just in case you didn't know, curtains and drapes should go all the way to the floor. If you are purchasing ready-made drapes, measure the curtain-rod-to-floor length and buy that. Or buy a size longer and then hem it up. Window treatments are a quick and easy way to completely change up the look and feel of a room, so go ahead and have fun with them!
